Nellie Bly (May 5, 1864 – January 27, 1922) was a journalist from the New York World who pretended to be mentally ill for 10 days. She uncovered the cruel treatment of patients (some of which were not really mentally ill) and it resulted in an $850,000 increase in the budget of the Department of Public Charities and Corrections. It also ensured that future examinations were more thorough such that only the seriously ill were committed to the asylum.
